Chuck Mathena Center is pleased to announce that Candace Wilson, Executive Director of CMC, has been named a 2024 West Virginia Wonder Woman by WV Living Magazine.
Since 2014, WV Living magazine has been honoring West Virginia Wonder Women, amazing women who are raising the bar in their communities, serving as beacons of light in their industries, and forcing change for the greater good. They are leaders in their homes, their communities, businesses, organizations, and more who are transforming West Virginia for the better. Wonder Women are nominated by readers, former Wonder Women, and businesses and organizations from throughout the state and then selected by the WV Living Magazine’s editorial team as the cream of the crop to be named West Virginia's Wonder Women.
Once the drum major for Marshall University’s Marching Thunder, Candace now leads the efforts at the 1,000 seat, state-of-the-art Chuck Mathena Center in Princeton, WV and is currently celebrating her 10 year anniversary with the center.
Growing up in Princeton, Wilson was submerged in the arts, including band and choir. She always had a love for theater, but it was the Marshall Artist Series that truly fueled her passion. “Having the opportunity to attend everything from local theater to Broadway performances in Huntington breathed life into me in ways I didn’t know possible,” she says. “I am so incredibly honored to be able to do the same for my community.”
Wilson has been with CMC since 2014 but puts her skills to use all over West Virginia. She currently serves on the board of the Mercer County Convention and Visitors Bureau and works with the City of Princeton to help with community events. She and her husband David work together adjudicating marching band festivals throughout the state. She can often been seen working in the concession stand to help fundraise for band programs in Mercer County.
Wilson’s immense passion keeps her inspired. “I love with my whole personality and continuously seek to learn, improve, and stay informed and engaged,” she says. “My goal is always to leave something better than I found it, and I hope when I’m long gone, I’ll be remembered for making a difference.”
In her free time, Wilson loves to attend concerts, travel, and cheer on the Thundering Herd.
